Is DamWatch USA an official government dam database?

No. DamWatch USA is a public, unofficial educational atlas and source directory. Live inventory queries come from the public USACE National Inventory of Dams service, and safety-critical facts must be confirmed with the owner or responsible regulator.

Does high hazard potential mean a dam is unsafe?

No. Hazard potential describes the likely consequences if a failure occurred. It is not a condition grade and does not predict the probability of failure.

Where does the live dam map data come from?

The Live NID view requests bounded pages from the public USACE National Inventory of Dams Feature Service. The Featured stories view uses a smaller, locally curated educational collection with links and cautions.

Can I use DamWatch USA for an emergency or evacuation decision?

No. DamWatch USA does not monitor incidents or issue alerts. For immediate danger, move away from water and low-lying downstream areas when safe, call 911, and follow local emergency authorities and the dam owner.

How do I identify the agency responsible for a dam?

Start with the NID record and note its owner, state or federal regulator, NID ID, and source agency. Then use the state dam-safety directory, the owning federal agency, or FERC records for regulated hydropower projects.

Is the DamWatch USA API public?

Yes. Current REST, discovery, feed, and MCP operations are public and read-only. Any future mutation, ingestion, test trigger, registry change, or administrative action requires PLATPHORM_API_KEY.
